68km Welcome to the Eastern Bay of Plenty 18km
Travelling along the Pacific Coast Highway from Tauranga you will pass through the village of Matata.
Approximately 14kms further on you will reach The Whitehouse Café (see advert above) on
the left just prior to the intersection with State Highway 30. Taking a right here leads you to the
settlement of Awakeri…see below. A left turn leads you to Whakatane.
AWAKERI SIDE TRIP
7kms along State Highway 30 towards Rotorua you will come to the village of Awakeri the home of
Awakeri Rail Adventures and 3kms further on the road to Rotorua Awakeri Hot Springs Holiday
Park (see adverts below)
The Awakeri Rail Adventures opened in 2014 by former NZ Railways Engine Driver Paul
Francis is now utilising the Historic Taneatua Branch Line. This line opened in 1927 and was part of
the East Coast Main Line terminating in Taneatua. With the opening of the Kaimai Tunnel in 1978
traffic on the line declined and it eventually closed in 2001.
